How to Add LLMs.txt to Shopify

Adding an LLMs.txt file to Shopify is easy. Shopify does not allow you to upload files directly to your website root folder, but there is a simple solution. You can upload the file to Shopify and create a redirect. The whole process takes only a few minutes.

Why Shopify Works Differently

Most websites let you upload a file directly to the root folder so it can be accessed at:

https://yourwebsite.com/llms.txt

Shopify does not provide direct access to website files. Instead, uploaded files are stored on Shopify’s CDN (Content Delivery Network) and receive a special URL.

For example:

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/xxxx/files/llms.txt

To make your LLMs.txt file available at /llms.txt, you simply create a redirect from your website URL to the Shopify CDN file.

Step 1: Create Your LLMs.txt File

Use the free LLMs.txt Generator to create your file.

Enter your Shopify store URL and let the tool scan your website. It will automatically create a structured LLMs.txt file containing your important pages, collections, products, and policies.

When the file is ready, click Download.

Step 2: Upload the File to Shopify

Log in to your Shopify Admin panel.

Go to:

Content → Files

(Some Shopify stores may show this under Settings → Files.)

Click Upload Files and select your downloaded llms.txt file.

After uploading, Shopify will create a CDN URL for the file.

Example:

https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/xxxx/xxxx/files/llms.txt

Copy this URL because you will need it in the next step.

Step 3: Create a Redirect

In Shopify Admin, go to:

Online Store → Navigation

Click URL Redirects and then Create URL Redirect.

Fill in the fields:

Redirect From:

/llms.txt

Redirect To:

Paste the Shopify CDN URL you copied earlier.

Click Save.

Step 4: Check Your File

Open your website in a browser and visit:

https://yourdomain.com/llms.txt

You should see your LLMs.txt file open successfully.

If you see a 404 error, wait a few minutes and try again. Shopify sometimes needs a short time to update its CDN.

How to Update Your LLMs.txt File

If your website changes, you can generate a new LLMs.txt file at any time.

Simply:

  1. Create a new file using the generator.
  2. Upload the new file to Shopify.
  3. Copy the new CDN URL.
  4. Update the existing redirect to point to the new URL.

You can also delete the old file before uploading the new one. Sometimes Shopify keeps the same file URL, but this is not always guaranteed.

Is There a Shopify LLMs.txt App?

Currently, Shopify does not have a dedicated LLMs.txt app.

The upload-and-redirect method is the easiest and most common solution. It takes only a few minutes and works well for most Shopify stores.
